Is better the asphalt or the cobblestone to decorate the pavement in the city center of Rome? And which is the most expensive to maintain?
The famous roman cobblestone covers more than 50% of the historical city center of Rome ( centro storico ). Via Nazionale has been repaved years ago in a very orignal way with cobblestones made of porphidian marble which is really a granite.
The problem that Rome has is the lack of knowledge of how to maintain the cobblestone and the lack of craftsmen dealing with stone cutting. Rome is a city of strong contrasts and you can imagine how it's hard to combine past and modernity: think of how it is slippery to go with the scooters in Rome when the cobblestone is wet! It's a real miracle if you can get home safe after having runned under the rain with your scooter.
Many accidents occur every day in Rome for this reason and the premium car insurance rates are expensive too.
Another issue is the time to put the cobblestone: if we want to put the asphalt, it takes 2 weeks to cover half mile of road, if instead we want to put cobblestone, it takes 3 months.
The Majority of Rome is creating courses to learn how to cut properly the cobblestones, because in Rome at the moment there are only 2 families doing this job.
We think that the real solution is to transform the city center of Rome in a big pedestrian area with cobblestone, because this is the real pavement of Rome and then to put asphalt in the most trafficated streets of Rome where the acoustic pollution can be absorbed by the features of the asphalt.
