WHAT IS ROME TODAY |
Roma was founded over 3000 years ago on both sides of the Tiber river on top of the seven hills and it has grown into a city of more than 3 million people covering 580 square miles of central Italy. Within this area there is the independent Vatican City State. Rome, after becoming the capital of the roman empire and the capital of the papal states, was made capital of the newly united Italy in 1870.
It's about 17 miles ( 28 km ) from the sea and has a good rail and road links to many other italian towns and cities.
Rome is southern Europe, on the same latitude as New York. It has two airports, Leonardo da Vinci also well known as Fiumicino, and Ciampino, located in the south of Rome. Rome is far from the main european cities like Athens, London and Paris around 2 hours flight. Rome is also at the center of the main road network, parts of which follow the routes of the ancient roman roads.
It's important to know for people arriving to Rome by car that a major ringroad, the Grande Raccordo Anulare ( GRA ) circles the city and links up with all the main roads into Rome.
